Lenora Smith

Lenora was first elected in 2002 as Member-at-Large and was re-elected four times to serve on the Executive Board. She has been a career civil servant with the NYC Department of Environmental Protection since 1988.

She was elected as a Shop Steward in 1992, representing 425 members at her worksite, diligently working to get them more involved with the Union. Lenora represents Local 1180 in labor-management meetings and in various Quality of Work Life (QWL) committees, and Oversight Committees, and has served as a Labor Chair QWL/DEP Employee Recognition Committee. She has been an active member of the Union’s Political Action Committee for 25 years. Lenora is the Chairperson of the Education Committee and Chairperson of the Book Club. She is also a member of the Civil Rights & Equity Committee, Civil Service Committee, and Hispanic Committee, and has recently joined the Women’s Committee and the Brooklyn Community Coordinating Committee.

Lenora has served on the Local 1180 Collective Bargaining Committee, which earned the members wage increases. She and other members of the Committee fought hard to demand recurring increment payment (RIP) for members. She is also a Delegate of the Minority Caucus and a Delegate to the CWA National Convention.

Lenora is an active member of the Labor Coalition for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA), Coalition of Labor Union Women, (CLUW) and Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU). She represents Local 1180 as a Delegate to the Central Labor Council, the AFL-CIO, and U.S. Labor Against the War.
