Gina Strickland 
First Vice President

Gina Strickland started as a civil servant in 1985 as an Office Aide with the Department of Finance. In 1992, she was appointed to Principal Administrative Associate.

In 1993, she was elected as a Shop Steward, representing more than 100 members. In 2000, Gina became a fulltime Local 1180 Staff Rep, assisting and advocating for members, and representing them at disciplinary hearings, supervisory conferences, and investigative hearings. Gina has successfully won numerous grievances for members.

In 2002, she was appointed to fill an open Member-At-Large seat, and was subsequently elected by the membership to retain that position. Gina has served on all of the most recent Local 1180 PAA et al contract bargaining committees.

After 11 years as a Staff Rep, Gina was promoted to Supervisor. She was elected 2nd Vice President in 2011. As an officer, she also became a Trustee of Local 1180’s Administrative, Security Benefits, Retirees, and Annuity funds. With the Trustees’ continued sound investments, member’s annuity accounts, which started at $522, now average more than $20,000.

In 2014, Gina was elected 1st Vice President and continued her advocacy for the members. She took the lead in meetings with various agency commissioners in getting members appointed from the Administrative Manager list, even though the agency had no provisionals serving or vacancies.

Gina regularly meets with agency commissioners and upper management to address concerns raised by members and initiate conversations on career opportunities for members. She participated in the Administrative Manager Arbitration Case to increase salaries, and continues to actively participate in the ongoing EEO case. She has negotiated NYC School Construction Authority and Unified Court System contracts, and participated in many other contract bargaining sessions.

Gina represents 1180 at the Municipal Labor Committee and Health and Hospitals management-labor meetings; is a Central Labor Council delegate; Chairperson of 1180’s Caribbean Heritage and Civil Service committees; member of the Editorial Committee; has been an instructor for Shop Steward training and exam prep classes; and is a facilitator for CWA labor political training and 1180’s political and media training. She is a graduate of the NYS AFL-CIO/Cornell ILR Union Leadership Institute.
