Exam Prep Programs

Exam Prep Programs are developed, on an as-needed basis, to assist members in preparing for "targeted" civil service promotional and open competitive exams leading to management, computer skills and other targeted titles.

Exams leading to civil service employment are administered and conducted by the NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) and the School Construction Authority (SCA).

DCAS and SCA prepares tentative yearly exam schedules.  Exams are announced (open for filing) on a monthly basis.

Take advantage of city exams!  When an exam officially opens for filing, the Education Fund offers prep courses on weekday evening and on Saturday mornings.

The Education Fund supervises the development of course material based on test information and assists members in completing the Education and Experience Forms.

The Education Fund has also developed study material covering the following topics:
Test-Taking-Techniques
Exam Strategies
Timed! In-Class Multiple-Choice Exercises in Administration, Management Situations, Written Expressions, Reading Passages, and Basic Word Problems

The Civil Service System The City fills many of its positions through the Civil Service Exam Process--a process guided by the New York State Civil Service Law.  The law is in place to help ensure that the hiring process is competitive and fair.

State civil service written tests are conducted in various locations throughout the state, usually in schools or colleges.

Promotion and Transition Examinations
The New York State Department of Civil Service offers the opportunity to apply for these examinations online.  Candidates may also apply for these examinations using NYS-APP or at NYS Civil Service Outreach and Information Center.
