primary election endorsements In New York City, incumbent Democrats are more likely to get struck by lightning than to lose a bid for re-election. So it’s big news that Rep. Ed Towns, of Brooklyn’s 10th Congressional District, has two serious challengers this year, both of whom are criticizing his conservative politics and no-show record in Washington. When Towns did bother to show up, he joined Republicans in voting for free trade deals that hurt American workers; repeal of inheritance taxes on the very wealthy; and tighter bankruptcy regulations that hurt the poor. The time is ripe to dump Towns and bring in one of his progressive challengers. Local 1180 gave the nod to State Assembly-member Roger Green, who has shown a strong commitment to affordable housing and the public schools. Brooklyn has another hot contest, for the open seat left by retiring Rep. Major Owens.
