2006 primary election endorsements
September 2006

In New York City, incumbent Democrats are more likely to get struck by lightning than to lose a bid for re-election. So it’s big news that Rep. Ed Towns, of Brooklyn’s 10th Congressional District, has two serious challengers this year, both of whom are criticizing his conservative politics and no-show record in Washington. When Towns did bother to show up, he joined Republicans in voting for free trade deals that hurt American workers; repeal of inheritance taxes on the very wealthy; and tighter bankruptcy regulations that hurt the poor. The time is ripe to dump Towns and bring in one of his progressive challengers. Local 1180 gave the nod to State Assembly-member Roger Green, who has shown a strong commitment to affordable housing and the public schools.

Brooklyn has another hot contest, for the open seat left by retiring Rep. Major Owens. Prominent challengers vying for the District 11 seat include Chris
Owens, the son of Major; City Councilmembers Yvette Clarke and David
Yassky; and State Senator Carl Andrews, who once worked for Eliot Spitzer. All are progressives, but Local 1180 backs Andrews because he has put labor issues, such as stopping job outsourcing and raising the federal minimum wage, front and center.

September 12 is election day for New York City party primaries.
