From August 30 through September 2, the Republican National Convention will be held here in New York City. In a shameless attempt to exploit the 9/11 tragedy politically, the GOP has decided to hold its convention here on the eve of the third anniversary of the attack. Meanwhile, Republican policies have shafted New York City and New Yorkers alike. Hundreds of groups are holding educational and protest events before and during the convention. We urge Local 1180 members to be involved in their communities and be part of this creative resistance to the Republican agenda.

In particular, we urge 1180 members to come to three events, one sponsored by the union and two that we are actively participating in.

Free screening and discussion of Fahrenheit 9/11, August 26, 2004, 6:30 p.m., Local 1180, 6 Harrison St., lower level. PLEASE CALL 212-226-6565 TO RESERVE A SPOT. (Our first screening, on August 25, has filled up already, so we added a second night.)

Local 1180 is holding a special screening of the new Michael Moore documentary, Fahrenheit 9/11. The film, which Disney refused to release and then Moore scrambled to find new backers for, has turned into an instant hit. It's the largest grossing documentary ever and has played to packed theaters all over the country. The movie includes gripping testimony and footage showing the real costs of the war in Iraq, and it asks hard questions about the Bush Administration's response to 9/11 and the reasons for the Iraq war. It turns a critical eye to Democrats as well as Republicans and touches on everything from the disenfranchisement of Black voters in the 2000 election to civil liberties violations and the Patriot Act. It's a must see for anyone who wants to understand what's at stake in this year's presidential election.

THE SCREENING IS FREE BUT YOU MUST RESERVE A SPOT. PLEASE CALL 212-226-6565, EXT. 4914, 4962 OR 4961.

The World Says No to the Bush Agenda! August 29, 10 a.m., gather at 22nd Street between 6th and 7th Avenues, big anti-war march and demonstration.

Of the many protest events during the convention, the August 29 march organized by United for Peace and Justice promises to be the biggest and most important. It is a worldwide day of action, with a particularly crucial opportunity for those of us in New York City to repudiate Bush's policies and his cheap use of 9/11 to justify everything from civil liberties violations to union busting. Local 1180 will join other unions in a labor contingent that will gather starting at 10 a.m. The march is slated to step off at noon, and will march past Madison Square Garden, where the Republican National Convention is being held. (A rally site for after the march has not yet been determined as of this writing, as the Bloomberg Administration has denied permits to UFPJ for over a year, but the march is LEGAL, PERMITTED and PEACEFUL.)

Protest the Bush Anti-Worker Agenda! Wednesday, September 1, 4p.m.
8th Avenue between 21st and 22nd Streets. Look for the 1180 red balloons.

As Bush is nominated for President inside Madison Square Garden, a united labor movement will be there to say no to Bush's war on the working class.

  • ·Bush declared war on America's working people, crushing labor rights, destroying millions of jobs, eliminating overtime pay for millions-all while giving tax breaks to the rich, bankrupting the U.S. Treasury and trying to privatize Social Security and Medicare.
  • Bush insisted that Homeland Security workers be stripped of union and civil service protections, saying collective bargaining was incompatible with national security.
  • Bush has spent $100 billion on a pointless, dangerous and immoral war in Iraq while our cities decay, our schools crumble and millions are without adequate housing or healthcare.
  • Bush lied about the weapons of mass destruction and made the United States a target for new terrorist attacks through his reckless foreign policy.
  • Bush has attacked our rights and liberties, allowing secret searches and trials, detaining people without access to lawyers or the right to hear the charges against them, and arresting and tear gassing peaceful protesters.

Nothing could be more important for the future of our jobs, our lives, our children, and our planet than making sure that Bush once again loses the election (and that this time, he gets booted from the White House, too!). So please come to these events, and bring your co-workers, too.

In conjunction with the Republican convention, the Local 1180 radio show will feature a convention special edition on Tuesday, August 31 at 5 p.m. on WYNE 91.5FM with host Bill Henning.
