Oppose Alito now
Throughout his time on the federal bench, Samuel Alito has chosen the most restrictive view when interpreting laws that protect workers' rights, always privileging corporations over workers when it comes to racial discrimination, sexual harassment, and workers' rights on the job. His nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court threatens the rights of America's workers. Again and again, he has ruled against wage, health and safety, anti-discrimination, pension and other important protections. His own colleagues in the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals have criticized his opinions for their excessively narrow view of worker protection and civil rights statutes. Alito has indicated, in memos and decisions, that he supports nearly unchecked presidential power--a true danger at a time when President Bush has authorized wiretaps on ordinary Americans in violation of our Constitutional rights. And he is committed to overturning Roe v. Wade, the landmark decision that protects women's right to an abortion. This nomination is important to working families, and it is clear that Samuel Alito would be a dangerous and destructive choice, who would turn back the clock on women's rights, civil rights, and the rights of workers. AFL-CIO president John Sweeney has said Alito's “judicial philosophy is at odds with the interests of America’s working families.” “Working families are struggling mightily against an assault on our hard-won gains in the legislative arena and at the bargaining table,” Sweeney wrote in the letter to senators. “Wages are being cut, pensions and health benefits are being drastically reduced or eliminated, and job security is vanishing. Now more than ever, workers need the protections offered to them under the laws passed by Congress to protect their pay, benefits, retirement security, and health. Working families need and deserve Supreme Court justices who understand and respect the importance of our hard-fought rights and protections, not justices who take an unduly narrow view of the law, and of our rights.” Click here to download a detailed review by the AFL-CIO of Alito's shoddy record on workers' rights.
