Youth 'n' Union workshop July 22

June 2006

Local 1180’s committee on Arts, Events, and Entertainment has organized the first ever Youth ‘n’ Union event for Saturday, July 22. The workshop, led by experienced union organizers and educators, will focus on labor movement history, how to organize, and the vital role that unions play in the lives of working people.

Children and grandchildren of Local 1180 members, age 12 to 18, are invited to attend free of charge, provided that they bring along a parent or guardian. The workshop will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and breakfast and lunch will be served.

“We want young people to understand how belonging to a union could impact their lives once they become working adults,” says committee chair Harlan Reid. “The idea is to drum up interest in unions, to get young people on board with the labor movement.” Reid, whose 16-year-old daughter plans to attend the workshop, says he hopes the workshop will become an annual event and a model for other union locals.

The registration deadline has been extended until July 21. Click here to download a registration form. For information, call Harlan Reid at 212-226-6565 ext. 4909.
