Summer camp at a union discount The New York City Central Labor Council has announced its 2006 Union Summer Camp program, which features 18 diverse camp programs for children of union members, including Local 1180. The camps range in length from one week to one month, and the fees are on a sliding scale according to family income. Offerings include Hoop Heaven Basketball Camp in Ulster Park, New York, with Christian speakers and individual sports instruction; Trail Blazers in Montague, New Jersey, with backpacking, camping, gardening, and nature studies; Trade Winds Lake Camp in Windsor, New York, with academic enrichment, sports, arts and crafts, photography, and boating; Girls Quest, in East Windham, New York, an all-girls program that focuses on literacy, peer support, problem solving, and leadership; and Vacamas Programs for Youth, in New York and New Jersey, which offers a Specialty Healthy Lifestyle Camp for Teens where young people learn how to maintain a healthy weight through nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle changes. Click here for a listing of all 18 camps, including dates, fees, contact information, and detailed descriptions. Once you choose a camp, you need to contact that camp directly about their application process. But then you are invited, as a Local 1180 member, to apply for a $50 scholarship to defray costs. Pick up the simple one-page scholarship application form at the Local 1180 office, at 6 Harrison Street, fourth floor, or download it here. The scholarship application deadline is May 19; drop it off or mail it to: Community Service Committee, CWA Local 1180, 6 Harrison Street, New York, NY 10013. For more information, call Community Service Committee chair Patricia Ruffin at 718-999-1308.
