Workers comp statistics bill signed into law
September 2004

In August, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg signed the Workplace Safety and Protection Act. The new law requires the city, for the first time ever, to keep track of workplace injury and illness data; the city must now uniformly monitor, document and make publicly available statistical information on worker health and safety. Such information is a necessary pre-condition for being able to address workplace hazards and reduce them. It will help identify high-risk jobs and worksites and make it possible to take steps to improve them. The bill was introduced in April by City Council Members James Gennaro and Joseph Addabbo. It had the strong backing of municipal unions and the New York Committee on Occupational Safety and Health (NYCOSH), whose chairperson is 1180 Second Vice President Bill Henning.
