Local 1180 launches new Organizing Committee and Hispanic Caucus May 2005 Know a family member, friend, or co-worker who doesn’t have a union? Local 1180’s organizer, Chris Aikin, invites members to join a new Organizing Committee, which will meet on the third Tuesday of each month. The Organizing Committee will lead 1180’s efforts to expand its membership through new union organizing in city titles as well as private-sector campaigns. All members, active and retired, are encouraged to attend and bring ideas about where and how Local 1180 can reach non-union workers and help them achieve a voice at work through 1180 representation. “It is vital that we build a member-driven organizing movement to increase our power as a union and empower other workers to better their own lives,” says Aikin. Interested members may contact Chris Aikin at 212-226-6565 ext. 1961. Local 1180 members Rafael Ortiz and Charles Garcia, an at-large member of the union’s executive board, have announced that they are re-convening 1180’s Hispanic Caucus, with Ortiz as chair. They encourage all Latino members of the Local 1180 family to join. A regular schedule of meetings will be announced soon. Interested members may contact Charles Garcia at 212-630-0884.
