Local presents bargaining demands to City

January 2007

On January 18, Local 1180 met with officials from the City's Office of Labor Relations and representatives of City agencies to present its bargaining demands for the next multi-year contract. Demands include a substantial wage increase, in keeping with the United Federation of Teachers' recent 7.1 percent raise over two years; new long-term experience differentials; improved transfer and reassignment policies; and more. Union negotiators indicated they will also put forth demands regarding new Local 1180 members in the Administrative Job Opportunity Specialist (Admin JOS) and Coordinating Manager (CM) titles as well payment of the full outstanding 1 percent raise.

Renee Campion, assistant commissioner of labor, will serve as lead negotiator for the City. The local was represented by a 13-member bargaining committee composed of Local 1180 members Hilary Bloomfield, Velma Dickson, Dorothy Harris, Arthur Johnson, Jr., Pamela Mondezie, Ayre Sivion, and Lenora Smith as well as President Arthur Cheliotes, First Vice President Linda Jenkins, and Executive Board members Gerald Brown, Alan Goldblatt, Clarona Williams, and Hazel Worley.

Campion said that the City would review the union's demands and then propose a date for continuing negotiations. According to Jenkins, the 1 percent raise and issues surrounding new members in the CM and Admin JOS titles may be dealt with in side meetings during the course of negotiations.

The local, meanwhile, is developing plans to put political pressure on the mayor to deliver the full 1 percent by beginning a series of meetings with City Council members to present the union's case for the raise.

April 23 update: The next negotiating session has been scheduled for May 1.
