City sets date for a first bargaining session on a multi-year contract January 2007 According to Local 1180 president Arthur Cheliotes, the City and the Health and Hospitals Corporation have finally agreed to begin bargaining with Local 1180 on its next multiyear contract. The first meeting is scheduled for January 18. The local's Bargaining Committee will meet on January 16 to finalize its demands. Cheliotes told members at the January 9 general membership meeting that the union would use the terms of the United Federation of Teachers' recent 7.1 percent two-year contract as a basis for negotiations. (That deal also included a higher pay ceiling for teachers with the most experience, a one-time $750 cash payment, a $1,000 longevity increase for teachers after five years on the job, and increased payments into the UFT's welfare fund.) "We believe that the UFT terms give our union a strong starting point going into our own negotiations," says Cheliotes. The outstanding 1 percent productivity raise, due in July 2004, will be a topic of discussion. The local, meanwhile, is developing plans to put political pressure on the mayor to deliver the full 1 percent.
