Jacob Javits Convention Center

Throwing in the towel
July 2004

Three years after joining Local 1180, public safety supervisors at the Javits Center were unable to reach an agreement with management for a contract, and they finally just threw in a towel and withdrew their union memberships. In a letter to Henning, who led the negotiations, the workers said, "During the past three years, we have been completely unsuccessful in our efforts to negotiate a union contract. There is no reason to believe this will ever change….if anyone could have achieved this, it would have been you," they added.

The Javits experience is, unfortunately, an all too typical one. One out of every three workplaces never get a first contract after deciding to unionize. There is no law that mandates that requires parties to settle a contract, one of several aspects of our labor laws that stack them against workers.
