ASPCA Dogged
determination wins first contract Nearly 16 months after narrowly winning an election for the veterinarians at the ASPCA, Local 1180 negotiators reached a tentative settlement (pending ratification). Negotiators agreed on a 10-year step progression, with a 10% premium for the vet working in adoptions, and production bonuses for those vets working in the Henry Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital. Members over the 10-year step will receive an average of 3.25% increases in each year. In addition, the ASPCA agreed to lock in a portion of the production bonus pay members received last year. The ASPCA also agreed to continue what is one of the most generous fringe packages among the non-profit sector, including fully paid medical and a defined benefit pension plan. Key among the non-economic issues is the establishment of a grievance and arbitration procedure, including an innovative "medical arbitration" procedure when the employer wants to challenge the medical competency of a doctor.
