your rights, weigh your options
As 1180 members serving provisionally at HRA face changes resulting from the movement of the PAA promotional list, HRA management has exploited the situation by trying to sow panic and scare people into JOS titles. If you're a provisional who has received an "at risk" letter, think before you act. There is no need to panic, and there is no need to do anything immediatelyno matter what management is telling you. Read the letter you receive carefully. If you have questions or want advice, please call your Local 1180 staff rep at 212-226-6565. HRA management has tried to use the uncertainty faced by 1180 provisional members as yet another way to force members into JOS titles. Some members have been told that if they don't go into the JOS pool by a certain date, they won't have a job. This is not true! While it is true that movement of the PAA list does put provisionals' jobs at risk, management is so desperate to fill JOS and AJOS titles that you can decide to pursue an AJOS title when and if you lose your provisional PAA title. There is no need to rush into a JOS or AJOS title now. Moreover, some members have been told specifically that their only choice is a JOS title. The JOS title is a step down from a PAA title. The AJOS title is a lateral move for 1180 members, and since management is particularly desperate to fill AJOS positions, there is no reason an 1180 provisional with Job Center experience should have to take a JOS position instead of an AJOS position. The most important thing for 1180 provisional members to remember is that there is no need to panic, you have time to make a decision that's in your best interests, and you have the union to help advise you in that decision. Don't rely on what you hear from managementthey have their own interests, and not yours, in mind.
