AJOS update: Just say NO!
May 2001

HRA management is desperate to get people to take the new positions in the Job Opportunity Specialist title series. But Local 1180 members know a bad deal when they see one, and so far we have refused to take the AJOS positions. As a result, management has not been able to implement their ill-conceived plans for this new title. If we continue to say no, they will have no choice but to abandon the whole idea altogether.

They cannot force anyone to take the new position. They have been unable to get people to volunteer, because it's such a bad deal for 1180 members. So now they are trying to intimidate people into signing up for the AJOS title. HRA managers, including Jason Turner himself, are going from site to site to try to convince people to take the new title. They've moved back their implementation date a half dozen times, and most recently announced that they wanted everyone to sign up for the title first, and then they would implement it later. That's a sign of how desperate they are to get people to sign up.

The first group of AJOS workers are to be moved throughout the city, wherever they are needed to work on the expected 40,000 cases of people who will reach their five-year welfare limit this year. So even though HRA managers have tried to use the possibility of transfers for those who refuse the new title as a way to intimidate people into taking the job, it turns out you're even more likely to be transferred if you do take it!

The bottom line is that HRA cannot run the welfare centers without our experience and expertise. If we stand fast and refuse to participate in this latest management scheme, there will be no transfers at all, because they will have no choice but to abandon the whole JOS idea.
